The Palestinian Authority wants UNESCO to declare the Patriarchs’ Cave and Rachel’s Tomb as its heritage sites while Israel is excluding them from its own list.

A government committee headed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is meeting Tuesday morning to decide on adding 10 more sites to Israel’s official list of heritage sites, but the Bible-based Patriarchs’ Cave and Rachel’s Tomb are not among them

Rabbi-Professor Daniel Hershkowitz, Science and Technology Minister and head of the Jewish Home party, issued an urgent appeal to Cabinet Secretary Tzvi Hauser that the two sites be included.

The government committee on heritage sites is headed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and includes Hershkowitz as a member.

“I am asking you to again review my position that the committee determining heritage sites include Rachel’s Tomb and the Patriarchs' Cave,” the Cabinet minister wrote. “These sites already receive government funds for development and maintenance, and their inclusion will not require a change in budget allocations.” he added.

He stated that excluding the holy sites from the list would be totally unacceptable by the public.

The Palestinian Authority, which recently was admitted as a member of the United Nations UNESCO agency, is using the sites in its campaign to claim sovereignty over Judea and Samaria. The Patriarchs' Cave is located in Hevron, between Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva, and Rachel's Tomb is located immediately adjacent to Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

Hershkowitz noted in his letter that both sites are deeply rooted in Jewish history. Tens of thousands of Jews visit each site every year.

The Palestinian Authority has claimed they are Muslim sites, even though Islam was not founded until about 1,400 years ago.

Once upon a long time ago, the Hebrew prophet Isaiah predicted that the Syrian capital city of Damascus would someday cease to exist. Isaiah, whose prophetic ministry spanned between 740–701 BC declared that it would be reduced to rubble. Some scholars believe this prophecy found fulfillment around 732 BC, shortly after Isaiah presaged it, when the Assyrians conquered Aram. Aram was the ancient name for much of modern day Syria.

But if it was fulfilled then, why did Jeremiah predict a similar scenario over a century later? And, why did Isaiah mention Assyria 37 times throughout his 66 chapters, but never once mention it in Isaiah 17. For instance Isaiah 8:3-7 clearly identifies an Assyrian conquest of Damascus. This found fulfillment in Isaiah’s lifetime, but Damascus still exists today. Furthermore the article below points out that Israel seemingly downs Damascus and that it appears to be an overnight destruction.

The relevant passages concerning the future of Damascus are located in Isaiah 17:1-14 and Jeremiah 49:23-27. Below are a few excerpts covering the topic from my recently released book called Revelation Road, Hope Beyond the Horizon. The book presents an exhaustive verse-by-verse commentary on Isaiah 17 and most of Jeremiah 49. Due to the extensive length of the commentary only portions are inserted in this article.

Since Damascus survives today as Syria’s second most populated city behind Aleppo, it demonstrates that Damascus never entirely ceased to exist. Therefore, if Isaiah intended his prophecy to be interpreted literally, it remains an unfulfilled prophecy.

Isaiah 17—The Burden Against Damascus

“Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap. The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they will be for flocks which lie down, and no one will make them afraid” (Isaiah 17:1-2, NKJV).
These first two verses of Isaiah 17 inform us that Damascus is destined for destruction, causing it to cease from being a city. Additionally other cities “of Aroer” are adversely affected, causing them to be “forsaken.” The Hebrew word used for forsaken is azab, and means abandoned, withdrawn, left behind, released, or neglected.

Since these cities eventually become agriculturally zoned “for flocks,” the best understanding is probably that the destruction of Damascus necessitates the withdrawal of the surrounding city populations, which ultimately leads to their release and rezoning. Whichever government is sovereign over this area at that time, will reevaluate the highest and best use of the territory to be agricultural.

Parson’s Bible Atlas lists three possibilities for Aroer: Aroer Judah, Aroer Sihon, and Aroer Gad. Of the three Aroer Gad becomes the likely option, because it was located nearest to Damascus. Amman, Jordan is within the area of ancient Aroer Gad, and is where most Jordanians live today.

Tribes of IsraelDamascus is located in southern Syria, and the Jordanian capital of Amman is in northern Jordan. Only 109 miles separates the two Arab capitals. Aroer Gad was part of the tribal territory of Gad. Numbers 32 informs us that the tribe of Gad was generally agriculturalists and as such, Gad requested this territory because it was suitable for his sizable flocks. Thus, the destruction of Damascus apparently spills over into northern Jordan, and probably finds a prophetic connection with Jeremiah 49:1-2. If it does, this may suggest that Israel is responsible for the destruction of Damascus.

Read Jeremiah 49:1-2 below.
“Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “That I will cause to be heard an alarm of war in Rabbah of the Ammonites; It shall be a desolate mound, And her villages shall be burned with fire. Then Israel shall take possession of his inheritance,” says the LORD” (NKJV).
The sequence of events could be as follows. Damascus and Rabbah, (Amman) are destroyed, probably in the same war effort. In the aftermath, Israel takes possession of northern Jordan including ancient Aroer, and rezones much of it for agricultural purposes. Ammon is a participant in the Psalm 83:6-8 Arab confederacy. Thus, “the alarm of war” in question could possibly be the Psalm 83 war.

If this is so, then the destruction of Isaiah’s Damascus and Jeremiah’s Rabbah are probably closely related Psalm 83 events. Assyria, which comprised part of modern day northern Syria when Psalm 83 was written, is also part of the Arab confederacy.
“The fortress also will cease from Ephraim, The kingdom from Damascus, And the remnant of Syria; They will be as the glory of the children of Israel,” Says the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 17:3, NKJV).
As previously mentioned, Assyria conquered Damascus around 732 BC and the “fortress” of Ephraim ceased to exist when the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BC. This could explain the first part of Isaiah 17:3, but fails to adequately address the latter part, which identifies the remnant of Syria with the glory of the children of Israel, or in some translations the “sons of Israel.” At the time of the Assyrian conquest of Damascus and Ephraim, there was no Syrian “remnant” under Israeli rule, “as the glory of the children of Israel.”

Therefore a dual fulfillment of the prophecy, which commonly occurs in Bible prophecy, may be forthcoming. What Isaiah could be warning about is that strongholds in northern Israel (Ephraim) will become war-torn at the time of Damascus’s destruction. The Syrian refugees (remnant) thereby, become captured by the IDF (children of Israel). Isaiah 17:9 discussed below suggests Israel is responsible for the downing of Damascus. Isaiah concludes verse 3 by informing us; even though Damascus will cease to exist, a remnant of Syrians still survive.
“In that day it shall come to pass That the glory of Jacob will wane, And the fatness of his flesh grow lean. It shall be as when the harvester gathers the grain, And reaps the heads with his arm; It shall be as he who gathers heads of grain In the Valley of Rephaim. Yet gleaning grapes will be left in it, Like the shaking of an olive tree, Two or three olives at the top of the uppermost bough, Four or five in its most fruitful branches, Says the LORD God of Israel” (Isaiah 17:4-6, NKJV).
These three verses open with “In that day.” Isaiah uses this expression four times throughout the chapter. The fact that he first uses this in verse four suggests that the preceding three verses all serve as the antecedent to the phrase. In other words, “In that day”:
  • Damascus ceases to be a city (v. 1),
  • The cities of Aroer are forsaken (v. 2),
  • The fortress of Ephraim, and kingdom of Damascus ceases (v. 3), and
  • The Syrian remnant becomes subservient to the glory of the children of Israel (v. 3).
If so, then at the time all the above occurs, Isaiah 17:4-6 finds fulfillment. These verses picture Israel in an undesirable condition, suggesting the Jewish nation comes under attack at that time. Some believe these verses occur at the time of Armageddon, because Israel will suffer severely at that time. The problem with aligning the “in that day,” with Armageddon at the end of the tribulation period is that verse 9 clues us otherwise. Isaiah 17:9 informs us that the cities that become forsaken are abandoned because of the Jews. Any cities abandoned during the campaign of Armageddon will be abandoned because of the Antichrist’s war related activities, not Israel’s.

The Rephaim ValleyIn conjunction with Israel’s suffering, Isaiah 17:4-6 mentions terms, idioms, and locations, like heads of grain, Valley of Rephaim, gleaning grapes, olive tree, olives, uppermost bough, and fruitful branches. These usages suggest there will be casualties in Israel. The Valley of Rephaim, is located in Israel, and is now called el-Bukei’a. This valley was the site of two historic wars the Israelites successfully waged under King David against their arch enemy the Philistines.

Coincidentally, Philistia is listed in Psalm 83. Perhaps Isaiah is telling us that, like David defeated the Philistines in the Valley of Rephaim, so will a lean and waning war-torn Israel bring about the destruction of Damascus before or during the Psalm 83 war episode. But, Jewish genocide will be averted as Jews will survive in northern Israel (uppermost bough), and even more will survive in the more populated cities (fruitful branches).
“In that day his strong cities will be as a forsaken bough and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel; And there will be desolation” (Isaiah 17:9, NKJV).
In this verse Damascus is personified by the pronoun “his.” In that day, that destruction of Damascus and “his” strong cities (of Aroer, v. 2) are forsaken; it will be a scene of “desolation.” At the time Damascus meets its doom, it is characterized by “strong cities” about it. It is not a picture of weakness, but of a militarily strong Syria.

The “children of Israel” are responsible for this desolation and these forsaken cities. This verse implies that the IDF may have something to do with the destruction of Damascus. The devastation appears to also extend into cities north of Damascus, identified as “an uppermost branch.”
“Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not been mindful of the Rock of your stronghold, therefore you will plant pleasant plants and set out foreign seedlings; In the day you will make your plant to grow, and in the morning you will make your seed to flourish; But the harvest will be a heap of ruins in the day of grief and desperate sorrow. Woe to the multitude of many people who make a noise like the roar of the seas, and to the rushing of nations that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters! The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters; But God will rebuke them and they will flee far away, and be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, like a rolling thing before the whirlwind” (Isaiah 17:10-13, NKJV).
These passages point to Syria assembled amongst a multitude of mighty waters that are rushing like roaring seas. This suggests that Syria, represented by Damascus, comes against Israel forcefully in a confederate effort with other nations. Seas typically represent the Gentile nations, and in this instance they are noisily roaring and rushing like mighty waters.

This pictures a massive military invasion. We can safely assume this invasion is targeted at Israel, because verse 9 implies that Israel retaliates. The fact that they come against Israel evidences they have forgotten the “God of their salvation.” The God of Israel is the God of salvation.

Isaiah says the war campaign results in a “heap of ruins,” and characterizes the whole episode as a “day of grief and desperate sorrow.” Isaiah 17:13 seems to connect with Psalm 83:13-15. In Psalm 83, Asaph petitions the Lord to do what Isaiah 17:13 says occurs to this confederacy. This implies that the destruction of Damascus and desolation of the surrounding cities could be related in some way to the Psalm 83 scenario.

These seemingly connecting portions of scripture both use the same six Hebrew words of galgal, paniym, ruach, har, radaph, and suphah, as comparatively highlighted below.
“O my God, make them like the whirling dust, [galgal] Like the chaff before [paniym] the wind! [ruach] As the fire burns the woods, and as the flame sets the mountains [har] on fire, So pursue [radaph] them with Your tempest, and frighten them with Your storm [suphah]” (Psalm 83:13-15, NKJV).
Compared to Isaiah 17:13 below:
“The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters; But God will rebuke them and they will flee far away, and be chased [radaph] like the chaff of the mountains [har] before [paniym] the wind, [ruach] like a rolling [galgal] thing before [paniym] the whirlwind [suphah].”
If this is the case, then the nations that rush mightily like many waters are possibly the Psalm 83:6-8 Arab States. If the destruction of Damascus occurs in a related Psalm 83 event, this would help explain why Syria, under the banners of either Aram or Assyria, doesn’t appear listed in the Ezekiel 38:1-6 coalition of Magog invaders.

For the above reasons, and several others pointed out in this section of Revelation Road commentary, it is reasonable to presume that the destruction of Damascus and the desolation of the surrounding strong cities, finds a correlation to the events prophesied in Psalm 83.
“Then behold, at eventide, trouble! And before the morning, he is no more. This is the portion of those who plunder us, and the lot of those who rob us” (Isaiah 17:14, NKJV).
Isaiah concludes his oracle against Damascus by describing the length of time it takes for the city to become reduced to rubble. Overnight, this historic city is destroyed. One evening Damascus flourishes, but by the next morning it’s obliterated. This apparently occurs as the penalty portion of Genesis 12:3. Syria’s capital city is reduced to ruins, because Syrians attempted to plunder Israel, probably in Psalm 83. It is a curse-for-curse-in-kind disciplinary duty, outlined in the Lord’s Gentile foreign policy of Genesis 12:3.

The bottom line of Isaiah 17 relevant to these present times, is that it could issue a stern modern day warning that Damascus can presently be destroyed overnight by the weapons technologies Israel presently possesses. Unless Syria changes its hateful disposition toward the nation of Israel soon, humanity could wake up one nearby morning to a flood of Syrian refugees exiting out of the Damascus rubble.

'Obama presidency has harmed Israel,' says Israeli official

Former Israeli Ambassador to the UN Dan Gillerman firmly stated last week that Barack Obama's time in the White House has caused great harm to Israel.

At a time when libelous accusations and efforts to delegitimize Israel are peaking, Obama's "weakness" has meant that "Israel has to keep apologizing for itself all the time," Gillerman said during a panel discussion at the annual Women's International Zionist Organization (WIZO) conference in Tel Aviv.

"We shouldn't have to be on the defensive," Gillerman added.

Gillerman went on to note that the ongoing turmoil and regime changes in the Middle East were all the more reason to replace Obama with a stronger president in the upcoming US presidential election. Israeli officials have been critical of Obama's response and approach to the takeover by forces such as the Muslim Brotherhood, which they have labeled as everything from lackadaisical to appeasing.

Obama has been far more unpopular with average Israelis than any US president before him. Most Israelis believe Obama wants them to take unreasonable risks for peace with the Palestinians, and that in the event of a major attack on Israel, Obama would abandon the US commitment to defend the Jewish state.

Recent demolitions of outposts are part of psychological warfare to prepare the public for mass expulsions, warns a Yesha leader.

Sarah Eliyash, deputy chairman of the Council of Jewish Communities in Judea and Samaria (Yesha), said she is calling for an urgent conference of Yesha leaders to break off relations with the government as a response to the recent wave of demolitions of Jewish homes and the expulsion of families, including women and babies, in the middle of the night.

“We plan to break off all contact with Cabinet ministers and Knesset Members, the army and the Civil Lands Administration” as a response to the expulsions, she said. “We cannot give legitimacy to this absurd situation.”

Eliyash explained, “In the past few weeks, we have experienced a series of violent expulsions, and no one has reacted to it. The accumulative psychological effect is very dangerous and creates a norm that is accepted by the general public.

“We know that psychologists helped plan how to execute the expulsion of residents of Gush Katif [in 2005], and it is more than probable that the recent expulsions are a prelude to make it acceptable to the general public to abandon us.”

She compared what she called “barbaric vandalism” by the police and hired Arabs, evidenced by several videos, with Egypt during the regime of Hosni Mubarak.

The Netanyahu government’s promises, if accepted by the Palestinian Authority, would result in the expulsions of more than 100,000 Jews in large communities, some of them numbering well over 1,000 families, throughout Judea and Samaria.

Deputy Knesset Speaker MK Danny Danon (Likud) has announced a new campaign to prevent Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s plan to guarantee Defense Minister Ehud Barak and the members of his Independence Party a spot on the Likud list for the next elections.

Danon’s move comes amid reports that Netanyahu is pressing for a reform of the internal elections process in the party that would make it possible to set aside four spots in the list for external candidates. The general consensus among observers is that this step is meant to allow Barak to receive high placement in the list’s “top ten.”

The other spots may be intended for Barak’s cohorts in the Independence faction, including Minister Shalom Simchon. The faction broke off from the Labor party a year ago, when Barak realized that he could face a mutiny within the party if he continued to sit in the Likud-led coalition.

“I have been running a campaign against the idea of guaranteeing Barak a spot on the Likud list for several weeks, and the support I’ve received is sweeping and unequivocal,” Danon told Arutz Sheva, adding he has been signing Knesset members to a petition on the issue. “Barak is a burden to the Likud and not an asset,” he emphasized.

Several Likud members have already expressed their reservations about the issue, including MK Tzipi Hotovely, who said earlier this week that she would take steps to prevent this plan from materializing.

Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Yaa’lon has also been revealed as being sharply opposed to the idea.

In a heated discussion among senior Likud officials this week, Ya’alon said, “Is he really an electoral asset? I think he is an electoral liability.”

He added, “Including [Barak and his cohorts] would set up an internal competition” between the Likud’s ideology and policies, and Barak’s. “Do we really need to guarantee positions in the party list for people who are diametrically opposed to our ideas,” Ya'alon said.

Netanyahu has denied the reports he promised Barak a designated spot on the Likud list, but Danon has already announced his candidacy for president of the Likud Conference and has made it clear that his central goal is to prevent the move.

“Barak is a Trojan horse that would try to harm the values of the Likud,” he said. “Guaranteeing him a spot on the list is not an option. A man who follows the Oslo Accords and the values of the Labor Party cannot be part of the legacy of Jabotinsky and Menachem Begin.”

Recent polls have predicted that if the Independence faction runs on its own, it would not make it into the 19th Knesset.

Israpundit » Blog Archive » U.S., E.U. Spearhead Islamic Bid To Criminalize Free Speech

The European Union has offered to host the next meeting of the so-called Istanbul Process, an aggressive effort by Muslim countries to make it an international crime to criticize Islam.

The announcement comes less than one month after the United States hosted its own Istanbul Process conference in Washington, DC.

The Istanbul Process – its explicit aim is to enshrine in international law a global ban on all critical scrutiny of Islam and/or Islamic Sharia law – is being spearheaded by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a bloc of 57 Muslim countries.

Based in Saudi Arabia, the OIC has long pressed the European Union and the United States to impose limits on free speech and expression about Islam.

But the OIC has now redoubled its efforts and is engaged in a determined diplomatic offensive to persuade Western democracies to implement United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) Resolution 16/18, which calls on all countries to combat “intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatization of … religion and belief.” (Analysis of the OIC’s war on free speech can be found here and here.)

Resolution 16/18, which was adopted at HRC headquarters in Geneva in March 2011, is widely viewed as a significant step forward in OIC efforts to advance the international legal concept of defaming Islam.

However, the HRC resolution – as well as the OIC-sponsored Resolution 66/167, which was quietly approved by the 193-member UN General Assembly on December 19, 2011 – remains ineffectual as long as it lacks strong support in the West.

The OIC therefore scored a diplomatic coup when the Obama Administration agreed to host a three-day Istanbul Process conference in Washington, DC on December 12-14, 2011. In doing so, the United States gave the OIC the political legitimacy it has been seeking to globalize its initiative to ban criticism of Islam.

Following the Obama Administration’s lead, the European Union now wants to get in on the action by hosting the next Istanbul Process summit, tentatively scheduled for July 2012.

Up until now, the European Union has kept the OIC initiative at arms-length. But Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary-General of the OIC, says the EU’s offer to host the meeting represents a “qualitative shift in action against the phenomenon of Islamophobia,” according to the International Islamic News Agency (IINA), the OIC’s official news/propaganda organ.

According to the IINA, “The phenomenon of Islamophobia is found in the West in general, but is growing in European countries in particular and in a manner different than that in the US, which had contributed to drafting Resolution 16/18. The new European position represents the beginning of the shift from their previous reserve over the years over the attempts by the OIC to counter ‘defamation of religions’ in the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations.
